A THOUGHTFUL FIRST STEP

Choosing a companion
for someone you love.

Start with the older adult’s wishes. Then ask clear questions about fit, boundaries, and how the service works.

Begin with what they want

Before comparing providers, ask your loved one what sounds enjoyable. Would they like someone to talk with, a partner for cards, help connecting with grandchildren, or a regular reading companion? Let them shape the idea rather than presenting a decision that has already been made.

Understand companionship and care

Providers use different terms. Ask exactly which tasks are included and which are excluded. Social visits, personal care, clinical services, and safety supervision are different responsibilities. A friendly visitor cannot automatically meet all of those needs.

Questions to ask every provider

Ask for the full price in writing

A quoted hourly rate is only one part of the cost. Confirm minimum hours, scheduling requirements, holiday charges, travel fees, and cancellation terms. Understand who employs the companion and what the provider is responsible for.

Look for a comfortable introduction

A successful introduction can be simple. Choose a familiar setting, a time the senior prefers, and an activity that feels natural. Ask afterward how the visit felt. Their comfort and consent are more meaningful than how busy the visit looked.

Respect privacy and independence

Agree on what can be shared with family and with whom. Keep passwords, financial accounts, and legal decisions outside the companionship relationship. If needs change, revisit whether the service is still appropriate.
